Starrett end measuring rods are used on machine tools to compare gages and measure parallel surfaces. These rods are constructed using special tool steel with ends hardened & precisely lapped to a spherical radius. They come integrated with a plain or insulated handle to minimise thermal expansion from the heat released from the user's hand.
