A check valve keeps water from draining back into the pump which can cause the pump to short cycle. It also creates a vacuum seal to prevent contamination due to reverse flow and siphoning.
Pumps feature motor overload protection to cool the motor due to excessive heat generation and for the protection of critical components.
The pump is controlled by a float / switch mechanism which turns the pump on when water collects in the tank and automatically switches off when the tank drains water out.
