Hexagonal-shaped nuts are easier to turn than other types of fasteners as they have six parallels and require less turning distance / radius. They only need one-sixth or 30-degree turns each time to reach the next flat parallel.
Lock nuts feature a nylon collar or insert that is thinner than the thread. The collar deforms across the mating diameter when the nylon insert lock nut is tightened, causing friction. After that, the nylon nut is sealed into place.
Washers are important as they facilitate accurate nut installation and protect soft materials by dispersing pressure across a large surface area.
Nylon or metal insert nuts increase friction to prevent loosening. Install a spring within the nut to securely grasp the bolt threads. It is intended to travel in the opposite direction of the nut if vibration or other forces cause it to unravel.
