Fume Extractors

Fume extractors are air cleaning systems used to collect and remove harmful fumes, smoke, dust and mist from work areas. They are widely used in welding and soldering stations, as well as in metal grinding, sanding, solvent mixing and painting applications. They have a fan that pulls fumes and particulates into the filtration system that features high-efficiency HEPA and carbon-activated filters to ensure that only clean air is recirculated into the workplace. Raptor Supplies offers a variety of stationary, bench top and portable fume extractors from Allegro, Miller Electric, Weller, Hakko and Labconco.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you measure airflow in a fume hood?

The volume of air passing through a fume hood is often equal to the sash opening area multiplied by the desired average velocity. For instance, if the hood has a sash opening of 7.5 sq.ft and velocity of 100 ft/min is required, then the air volume of the hood is 750 (7.5 x 100) CFM.

How much airflow do I need for a fume hood?

The acceptable minimum volumetric rate of air for a fume extractor is 25 CFM per interior sq.ft. of work area, as cited by the National Fire Protection Association.

What are portable smoke extractors?

Portable smoke extractors use HEPA filters that draw contaminated air and remove harmful particulates (up to 0.3 microns) from the air, thus improving indoor air quality and overall safety. They are used in manufacturing facilities, laboratories, hospitals and commercial kitchens. These portable smoke extractors have rubber feet that can easily fit on a countertop, floor or shelf next to the enclosure.

How do I clean my Miller Electric fume extractor filter?

  • Miller Electric fume extractors feature a self-cleaning filter mechanism that is easy to use.
  • Simply push a button on the control panel to activate the pulse cleaning cycle. This cleans the filter from the inside out and safely deposits the pollutants from the filter into the particulate disposal drawer.

How to replace the filter in a portable chemical fume extractor?

  • The HEPA filter and pre-filters are located directly behind the inlet where the arm of the extractor is attached.
  • Lift the hinged cabinet door on the extractor to get access to the filters.
  • Inspect and replace the pre-filter if clogged.
  • Re-install metal frame in front of HEPA filter and align properly with HEPA filter gaskets.
  • To remove the HEPA filter, if needed, remove the pre-filter assembly first and then tilt the HEPA forward and lift it out of the cabinet.
  • The HEPA filter might be contaminated with potentially toxic dust due to heavy use in chemical processes. Hence, use approved EPA methods for disposing of HEPA filters and other products.
