Dowel Pins

Dowel pins are also known as lock pins / straight pins. They are machined to specific tolerances, making them ideal for locating, joining or aligning components to absorb lateral stress. Raptor Supplies offers these pins from brands like Grainger, Eazypower, Richard Manno Co. and Micro Plastics. Dowel pins and shafts are used for aerospace, automotive, electrical, tool & die, prototyping and military applications. These pins can be used as a shaft / pivot / hinge in components to handle frequent insertion & removal without any distortion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between press fit and slip fit?

  • A hole that is slightly smaller than the pin diameter is intended to be used with press fit dowel pins, which have a slightly oversized tolerance. On the other hand, slip fit dowel pins glide easily in the hole to limit movement without using any extra equipment.
  • Press fit dowel pins should be installed using an arbour press. Never use a hammer, which may risk damaging the pin and causing it to fail. Slip fit dowel pins are simple & flexible to install by hand.

What should I do if a dowel pin becomes stuck during installation or removal?

If a dowel pin becomes stuck, applying a penetrating lubricant or heat to the surrounding area can help loosen it. To prevent mating component damage, do not overuse the driver.

Can dowel pins be removed if needed?

Yes, dowel pins can be removed using tools such as drift punches or puller tools designed for that purpose. Pull out dowel pins, in particular, are designed for easy extraction by screwing in a bolt or rod.

How do I determine the correct size of dowel pins to use?

Consider factors like the application requirements, the materials being joined, and the desired fit (such as clearance, interference or transition fit).

What is the difference between press fit and slip fit dowel pins?

Press fit dowel pins are inserted into pre-drilled holes with a tight interference fit for a precise alignment and to prevent relative movement between components. They are usually installed by pressing or hammering. In contrast, slip fit dowel pins fit into pre-drilled holes with a looser tolerance and allow easier hand insertion & removal.
