Hoists are pulling devices that lift loads vertically using a wire rope or chain. Thern winches, on the other hand, can pull loads both horizontally & vertically when placed in floor-mounted, wall-mounted or underhung orientation. Choosing of underwounding versus overwounding of a wire rope depends on the Thern winch being selected or more specifically the brake incorporated into the winch. Hand winches mostly come with disc brakes that hold the load in only one direction. Winding the wire rope incorrectly may cause the winch to operate against the brake. This may lead to brake failure, resulting in the load falling or causing injury.
